Rewind, the Canadian cloud backup startup, just raised $15 million in a Series A funding round led by Inovia Capital.
Founded in 2015, Ottawa-based Rewind has so far helped more than 80,000 businesses worldwide – including Shopify and Procter & Gamble’s Charmin and Pampers – keep their data safe.
The firm is working to disrupt the data protection market, which Insider previously reported looks set to be worth more than $103 billion globally by 2027.
“It is no longer a matter of if a company will suffer a data loss, but when,” said Mike Potter, cofounder and CEO of Rewind. “Without comprehensive cloud data protection, businesses risk permanently losing critical data without much recourse.”
Actively hiring across all core business functions, Rewind said it would use the new capital to strengthen its R&D, sales, marketing and customer service teams to support its global market expansion.
Bessemer Venture Partner — an early backer of professional networking platform Linkedin — Ridge Ventures and Rink Ventures also participated in the round.
The Bessemer team is expecting major IPOs and acquisitions in the cloud startups space in the coming year because of the increasing demand for their services, especially since the onset of the coronavirus crisis and the rise in remote working.
“Cloud data has become a fundamental element of modern business, and therefore, also a primary business risk, as more critical business operations move to the cloud,” said Yousuf Khan, partner at Ridge Ventures. “But most organizations need to do much more in protecting their data by having a robust safety net.”
