The DeCicco brothers set out to raise a Series C round of $50 million to fuel more growth, but after working with Henry Ellenbogen from Durable Capital, which led the round, more investors were eager to pile in. Ellenbogen persuaded the founders to take the extra money now and use it to craft a longer-term plan.
“Henry is a long-term investor. He wasn’t investing with a 12-month mindset; he wanted this to be a five-year plan. So it really allows us to focus on the business on a much further outlook. That’s probably been the biggest change for us is slowing down to speed up,” Jimmy DeCicco said.
Since raising the round, Super Coffee has opened a new headquarters in Austin, Texas, and hired 30 employees, bringing its total to 135, with plans to hire up to 60 more employees within the next two years, DeCicco said.
The brothers also plan to up their distribution reach to 70% of the US by 2022 in comparison to the 40 percent reach they have now.
“Raising the round after a tumultuous year and a half of dealing with the COVID was a great way to reflect and see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Jake DeCicco said.
