Wandercraft, a startup that designs exoskeletons to help wheelchair users walk, recently raised $45 million in fresh funding.

The French firm, which was founded in 2012, said it’s one of the only commercial companies to have mastered “dynamic walk robotics,” with its Atalante exoskeleton already in use in a host of rehabilitation clinics across Europe over the past two years.

The Series C funding round was led by the US investor Quadrant Management. Bpifrance, a French government agency, also backed the raise in a deal that more than doubled the $30 million Wandercraft had raised to date. The startup said it could serve a market of 30 million wheelchair users worth about 50 billion euros ($56.7 billion).

“We are super excited to have attracted world-class investors from the USA and Europe to advance the development program of the company,” CEO Matthieu Masselin said.

The firm plans to expand from its native France into the nascent US exoskeleton market, which is dominated by major players such as Ekso Bionics, SuitX, and Sarcos.

“With the support of patients, medical professionals, and the deep-tech community,” Masselin said, “Wandercraft’s team has created a unique technology that improves rehabilitation care and will soon enable people in wheelchairs to regain autonomy and improve their everyday health.”
